Edward Eugene “Gene” Law, longtime Newkirk resident, died Sunday, May 26, 2019 in Alliance Health Ponca City. He was 95.
The son of Dewey George Law and Alta Faye (Goodno) Law, Gene was born Feb. 20, 1924 in Ponca City. He grew up and received his education in Newkirk.
On Oct. 28, 1942 Gene and Anna Lucille Shupe were married in a double ceremony with his brother Clyde Law and Virginia Taylor at the First Christian Church, Newkirk, with the Rev. F. H. Shaul officiating. They left after the wedding and drove to Kansas City, Mo. where Gene had a job waiting for him with North American Aviation.
He has told his children many stories about that time, and they really must have been living on love, because on their first Thanksgiving it was two days before payday and they only had 20 cents between them, so they went to a café below the apartment they were renting and bought a turkey sandwich and split it!
Gene worked in many professions during his lifetime. He was employed by a number of companies, trucking, aviation, drilling and pipeline construction, and he owned and operated a sand and gravel trucking service, a radiator shop, and a service station. He always gave reverence and great appreciation to is lifelong hero, Marlin Glass for establishing within him the beginning of his deep-rooted work ethics with his first job starting in 1934 all the way through 1942. He was an errand boy, a salesman and a driver.
Gene and Lucille traveled the United States in their RV for several years after he retired from WTS Trucking in Ft. Worth, visiting just about every state. He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Newkirk.
Gene is survived by his children, Rosetta Ulrich-Arriola of North Richland Hills, Tex., Gloria Siratt of Ft. Worth, Tex., George “Eddie” and Lynn Law of Ponder, Tex., Donna and Bob Sewell of Lake Bridgeport, Tex., and Debi and Dewey Miller of Highland Village, Tex. He had 32 grandchildren and 24, great-grandchildren. He is also survived by and incredibly caring man that was his neighbor but became his amazing best friend, Brandon Weant, to which we, his children, are enormously grateful.
Gene was preceded in death by Lucille, his wife of 65 years; three sons-in-law, Eddie Ulrich, Don Siratt and Jim Arriola; his parents; and his siblings, Clyde Law, Dorothy Engelking, Maxine Bailey and Norman Law; and many other family members and friends.
Cremation has been effected. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 29 in the Newkirk Cemetery. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Gene Law’s name to the Carol and Kay Sheid Citizen Center, Inc. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service will serve as custodian of the memorial fund, and contribution may be mailed to P. O. Box 461, Newkirk 74647-0461.
