A memorial service for Dr. Gary Courtney, former dentist from Lansing, KS, has been set for 6:00pm on August 12th, 2019, at June’s Northland in Leavenworth, KS. He died Sunday, August 4th, at his home in Ponca City, OK, after an almost 3-year battle with Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

Gary Deane Courtney was born on July 27th, 1969, to Larry and Carol Courtney, in Lawrence, KS. He was raised in Bonner Springs, KS, and was a 1987 graduate of Bonner Springs High School. He graduated from Baker University in Baldwin City, KS in 1991, with a degree in Biology.

In 1996 he received his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from UMKC. Gary owned and operated his dental practice in Lansing, KS for 16 years, and eventually sold the practice upon receiving his cancer diagnosis.

Gary was known throughout the community as a very compassionate, gentle dentist, and reassured his patients with his easygoing personality and funny sense of humor. He relocated to Ponca City, OK, where he was employed by Dr. Quint Whitefield and Affordable Dentistry, medically retiring in 2018.

Gary served on the Lansing School Board and the Bonner Springs Chamber of Commerce. He also played bass guitar in the praise band at Lansing First Southern Baptist Church, where he and his family were members.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Bill Wiebke and Jim Courtney, as well as his cousin, Brendon Kasselman. Gary is survived by his wife, Nancy Courtney (Ponca City, OK); his son, Bryan Courtney (Leavenworth, KS); stepdaughter and stepson, Madison and Jake Bosworth (Winfield, KS); his parents, Larry and Carol Courtney (Basehor, KS); sister, Kelli Shelton, and nephew Kenneth Shelton (Bloomingdale, IL); brother and sister-in-law, Keven and Trisha Courtney (Bonner Springs, KS); grandmothers, Beatrice Courtney (Bonner Springs, KS) and Goldie Wiebke (Lincoln, KS); aunt and uncle, Lewis and Linda Kasselman (Bonner Springs, KS); cousins Lacie Faison (Kansas City, MO), Shannon Wiebke (Cedarville, AR), Blake Kasselman (Gilbert, AZ).
